Living in This World Like a Traveller (Musafir)

In our fast-paced world, many people live as if this life will last forever — chasing success, wealth, and comfort. Yet, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us a timeless reminder that reshapes how a believer views life:

“Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6416)

This short hadith beautifully captures the essence of Islamic spirituality: to live with awareness that this world is temporary and our true home is in the Hereafter.

The Meaning of “Live Like a Traveller”

When the Prophet ﷺ told us to live as a traveller (‘aabir sabeel), he encouraged believers to remember that our time in this world is brief.

A traveller doesn’t settle or grow attached to every stop. He rests, gathers what he needs, and continues his journey. In the same way, Muslims should prepare for the Akhirah (Hereafter) — the final destination.

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:

“And this worldly life is nothing but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah.”
Surah Al-An‘am (6:32)

The verse reminds us that worldly life is a temporary stage, not the final home.

Living with a Journey Mindset

A wise traveller keeps his goal in sight and avoids distractions. The Prophet ﷺ advised:

“When you reach the evening, do not expect to see the morning; and when you reach the morning, do not expect to see the evening. Take from your health for your sickness, and from your life for your death.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6416)

This teaches Muslims to live intentionally — making every day count. The traveller mindset means focusing on deeds, gratitude, and preparing for what’s ahead.

Detachment from Dunya — Without Neglecting It

Islam doesn’t tell us to abandon the world. It teaches balance — to work, earn, and build, but without letting the world control the heart.

Imam al-Ghazali wrote:

“The world is like a shadow — if you run after it, you will never catch it; but if you turn your back on it, it will follow you.”

We can enjoy the blessings of this world, but with moderation and thankfulness. True success is to use the dunya as a bridge to reach Jannah, not as a distraction from it.

The True Home — The Hereafter

No matter how long we live, life will end. Our eternal home is not here but with Allah in the Hereafter.

“Indeed, the home of the Hereafter — that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.”
Surah Al-‘Ankabut (29:64)

Every difficulty and test in this life is part of the journey. Living like a traveller helps us stay patient, hopeful, and spiritually focused.

5 Ways to Live Like a Traveller Today

  1. Focus on eternal goals — seek Allah’s pleasure over worldly fame.

  2. Limit attachments — keep possessions light and priorities clear.

  3. Value time — use every day for worship and good deeds.

  4. Be grateful and patient — for both blessings and trials.

  5. Remember your destination — every step leads toward meeting Allah.

Each of these actions brings barakah (blessing) and peace to the heart.

A Timeless Reminder from Ibn Umar

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) explained this hadith by saying:

“When evening comes, do not expect to live till morning; and when morning comes, do not expect to live till evening. Take advantage of your health before sickness, and your life before death.”

His words remind us to live with purpose and urgency — not wasting time in heedlessness.

Conclusion

To live like a traveller in Islam means to:

  • Walk lightly in this world,

  • Keep your heart free of attachment, and

  • Focus on reaching the eternal destination — Jannah.

“So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.”
Surah Al-Kahf (18:110)

May Allah guide us to live as humble travellers — grateful, purposeful, and focused on our return to Him.
