Every new Hijri year starts the same way for most of us. Someone sends a “Happy New Year” message in the family group, a few people reply with a heart, and then life carries on. Monday is still Monday.
But Muharram has a quieter message if we stop long enough to hear it. Another year has gone. And the road ahead is now one year shorter.
That isn’t meant to be gloomy. It’s just true.
The calendar starts with a journey
The Islamic calendar doesn’t count from a battle or a coronation. It counts from the Hijrah, the Prophet’s ﷺ migration from Makkah to Madinah. A journey. The companions who made it left houses, businesses and family behind. They carried very little, because they knew that what they were walking towards was worth more than what they were leaving.
It’s fitting, then, that the Prophet ﷺ described the believer’s whole life in the same terms:
“Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6416)
That one sentence is where our charity gets its name. Musafir means traveller. We chose it because it’s the most honest description of where every one of us actually stands.
What does a traveller do differently?
Think about the last time you went somewhere for a short stay. You probably didn’t repaint the room. You didn’t buy furniture for it. You kept your bag half packed, because you knew you’d be leaving.
A traveller isn’t careless with the place they’re staying. They’re just clear about what it is. They put their effort into the things that come with them when they go.
So what comes with us? The Prophet ﷺ answered that as well. When a person dies, three things follow them: their family, their wealth and their deeds. Two of them turn back. Only the deeds stay. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6514)
One question for 1448
We’re not going to hand you a list of twenty resolutions. Most of those are gone by Safar anyway.
Instead, try asking yourself one thing as the year begins. What am I sending ahead this year?
Allah puts it plainly:
“O you who believe, be mindful of Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent ahead for tomorrow.” (Qur’an 59:18)
Sending ahead is exactly what charity does. The money leaves your account here, but it isn’t lost. It’s been moved. It arrives before you do.
That might be a small monthly amount, set up in the first week of Muharram so it runs quietly all year. It might be a commitment to help feed a family through our food appeal. Or it might simply be giving something today, so that the very first deed of your new year is a generous one.
Whatever you choose, make it something you’ll still be doing when Dhul Hijjah comes round again. Small and steady beats big and forgotten.
From all of us at Musafir, may Allah make 1448 a year of mercy, forgiveness and good deeds sent ahead. And may He make the road easy for us, however long or short it turns out to be.
