On the authority of Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (saw) prescribed the Zakat al-Fitr as a purification of the fasting person from empty and obscene talk and as food for the poor. If anyone pays it before the prayer (of Eid), it will be accepted as Zakat. If anyone pays it after the prayer, that will be a Sadaqah like other Sadaqahs.” (Abu Dawud)
What is Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana, is a charitable obligation given to those in need at the end of Ramadan. It serves as a means of purifying one’s fast from any shortcomings and ensures that those who are less fortunate can also partake in the celebrations of Eid.
This form of charity is obligatory on every member of a household, including children and elderly individuals, and must be given before the day of Eid.
How Much is Zakat al-Fitr?
The amount of Zakat al-Fitr is equivalent to the value of one meal and must reach those in need before the Eid prayer. To fulfill this obligation effectively, we recommend a donation of £4/5 per person and encourage giving as early as possible during Ramadan to ensure timely distribution.
By paying your Zakat al-Fitr on time, you not only purify your fast but also bring joy and relief to those in need, allowing them to celebrate Eid with dignity and happiness.
May Allah accept our fasting, prayers, and charity. Ameen.
